Figure 1: Uncoated Nucleocapsids in the Cytoplasm of a Spindle Cell in Kaposi's Sarcoma from the Spleen of a Patient with AIDS.

The nucleocapsids have dense cores, some of which acquire envelopes after budding into cisternae (arrows). By PCR, this lesion was found to contain KSHV DNA, but not Epstein-Barr virus or cytomegalovirus DNA (uranyl acetate and lead citrate, x105,000).
