Comparative Analysis of SAT, GRE, and MCAT Scores

Financial Mismanagement at Morgan State University

The Mean SAT Score for Maryland's Historically Black Colleges/Universities (Bowie State University, Coppin State College, University of Maryland: Eastern Shore, and Morgan State University) from 1989 to 1999 is 817.73. For other public Colleges/Universities in Maryland (Salisbury State University, Frostburg State University, Towson University, University of Maryland: Baltimore County, University of Maryland: College Park, and St. Mary's College), during the same time period, the Mean SAT Score is 1077.46. This is a Mean difference of 259.72 and is statistically significant. In 2002, these scores dropped, from 11 to 49 points, for all of Maryland's Historically Black Colleges/Universities. Generally, the higest SAT score for these insitutions was either equal to or lower than the the lowest SAT score for Maryland's other four year Colleges/Universities.

The National Mean SAT Score, for this same period, is 943.36. When compared to Maryland's Historically Black Colleges/Universities, the Mean difference is 125.63 and is statistically significant. Maryland's other public Colleges/Universities had significantly higher SAT Scores for entering freshman compared to the National Mean SAT Score, with a Mean difference of 134.1.

Thus, entering freshman between 1989 and 1999, for Maryland's Historically Black Colleges/Universities, where both the full-time faculty and the student body are maintained as predominately African American, had significantly LOWER SAT Scores when compared to other public Colleges/Universities in Maryland as well as Nationally. Also, Maryland's other public Colleges/Universities had significantly HIGHER SAT Scores when compared Nationally. Also, for 2002-2003, the mean SAT score for entering freshman at Maryland's Historically Black Colleges/Universities was significantly lower than the State average.

For 1999, Maryland's Historically Black Colleges/Universities had a total enrollment of 17,786 students; 85% were African American, while Maryland's other public Colleges/Universities had a student enrollment of 73,237; 12% were African American students. The full-time faculty at Maryland's Historically Black Colleges/Universities were 62% African American, and 5% African American at Maryland's other public Colleges/Universities; the latter in light of Affirmative Action hiring practices. The data for 2002 are similar*. Further, in 2001 and in April/August 2000, Black/Black American College/University graduates scored significantly lower than all other racial/ethnic groups on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).
